KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Grace College softball star Brooke Shell entered rare air with the announcement of her Second Team All-American honor from the NAIA.

Shell became only the second NAIA All-American in Grace’s softball history.

The sophomore outfielder paced Grace’s softball team in many offensive categories and broke the program’s record for most hits in a season during the 2013 season.

Shell batted .438 as the team’s leadoff hitter, which was the fifth-highest average in team history. Her nine triples was No. 1 in the NAIA, and her 77 hits on the season ranked No. 1 in Grace’s record books.

“I am thrilled for Brooke’s recognition as an All-American. She had a phenomenal year as a true triple threat. Brooke is a key part of our program’s growth for the future,” said Grace head coach Heather Johnson. “Our goal when [my husband Jay and I] returned to Grace was to restore the program to its national caliber status, and Brooke’s recognition is one step toward that goal.”

Johnson, Grace’s first NAIA All-American in 1994, has the unique distinction of both being and coaching an All-American in Grace’s program. The standout pitcher still holds Grace’s single season and career pitching records.

“When I called Brooke to let her know, I congratulated her about joining the club,” Johnson joked. “Having been an All-American and having the opportunity to coach the other All-American at Grace is fulfilling. I am looking forward to continue building the program and to have many players of Brooke’s level compete in the black and red.”

Shell was also named the Crossroads League Newcomer of the Year and an NCCAA Second Team All-American.

During the spring 2013 season, the Lady Lancers earned their most wins (19) in a season since 1997.
