Raiders, Falcons Claim Softball Titles
The Northridge and Fairfield softball teams each earned regional championships Wednesday night to extend their seasons.
The host Raiders blanked South Bend Riley 3-0 in a Class 4-A regional contest in Middlebury.
The Falcons collected the first regional title in program history with a 5-1 victory at Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger in a Class 3-A regional matchup.
No. 2 Northride captured its second straight regional championship and the sixth in program history by beating the Wildcats for the second straight year.
Junior Haley Nixon was her usual stellar self in the circle Wednesday evening for the Raiders. The right-hander allowed five hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks to run her season pitching mark to 25-1.
The Raiders, who beat Riley 7-6 during the regular season and 6-2 in the regional in 2012, got all the offense they would need in the first inning. Junior Hannah Kistler smacked a two-run, two-out double for the hosts. Northridge added an insurance run in the fifth frame on a two-out RBI single by Kylee Lantz.
Brianne O’Dell had two hits and Madison Schrock a double for Northridge, which improves to 26-1 with its 24th straight win. The lone loss for the Raiders was a 6-5 setback to Class 1-A defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Lakewood Park Christian in early April.
Riley, which sees its season end at 20-6, left nine runners on base in the loss.
Northridge (26-1) plays No. 19 Portage (22-6) Saturday at 11 a.m. in the first semifinal game of the West Lafayette Harrison Semistate. No. 5 Huntington North (25-2) then plays Harrison (15-14) in the second semifinal. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.
Huntington North edged Northridge 1-0 in the semi state title tilt in 2012 to end the Raiders’ season at 30-2.
Fairfield’s young players performed like seasoned veterans Wednesday in taking care of No. 4 Bishop Dwenger.
Sophomore Danica Mast fired a three-hitter in the circle and freshman DJ Martz blasted a pair of solo home runs to pace the No. 18 Falcons.
Martz, who has now hit four roundtrippers in postseason play, connected for solo shots in the fourth and sixth innings.
Freshman Alexis Zook had two hits, including a double, for the Falcons. Senior Kaela Miller had two singles and senior Riley Troyer and junior Karen Schwartz each had an RBI.
Dwenger, which had won 21 games in a row, finishes at 23-3.
Fairfield, which beat Lakeland 5-4 to claim its first-ever sectional title, improves to 21-8.
Fairfield plays Hanover Central (18-9) Saturday at around 1 p.m. in the second semifinal game of the Twin Lakes Semistate. South Bend St. Joseph (24-8) meets No. 6 Yorktown (23-4) in the semifinal opener at 11 a.m. The semi state title game is set for Saturday at 7 p.m.
