Trojans Set For Sectional Finale
UNION MILLS – The Triton softball team is set to play for a sectional championship today.
The No. 14 Trojans moved into the title tilt in convincing fashion Wednesday night.
Ace hurler Mallorie Jennings fired a one-hitter as Triton easily defeated Culver 10-0 in a semifinal game of the Class 1-A South Central Sectional.
Triton, whose only other sectional championship came in 2008, will play Westville today at 5:30 p.m. ET in the championship contest.
Westville outlasted host and two-time defending champion South Central 9-7 in 12 innings in a semifinal game Tuesday night.
Jennings, already the program’s all-time leader in strikeouts, was on her game again Wednesday. The junior right-hander struck out nine as Triton beat Northern State Conference foe Culver for the third time this season.
Krystal Sellers led the offense for Triton with three hits, including a home run and a double, and three RBI.
Brycelyn Garbison and Hannah Jennings each drove in a pair of runs for the Trojans.
Triton improves to 21-8 on the season.
The winner of the South Central Sectional will play at the winner of the Lakewood Park Christian Sectional in a one-game regional on May 28.
No. 1 and defending state champion Lakewood Park Christian is the overwhelming favorite to win their own sectional, where the finale is scheduled for Friday night. Lakewood Park faces Elkhart Christian today at 5 p.m. in a semifinal game. The winner will then play Fort Wayne Canterbury Friday at 5 p.m. in the sectional championship game at Lakewood Park.
