Teel Just Misses State Spot
WARSAW – Caylie Teel just missed earning a spot in the State Finals Tuesday night.
The great news for her is that she will have two more chances to make it.
The Tippecanoe Valley sophomore standout placed fourth in the finals of the 100 meter dash at the Warsaw Regional.
The top three finishers in each event earn a berth in the State Finals on Saturday, June 1 at Indiana University in Bloomington.
Teel clocked in at 12.89 in the finals of the 100 after coming in seeded at 12.99. She was just behind third place finisher Chelsey Wakes of Mishawaka, who hit the finish in 12.88.
South Bend Clay senior Michelle Adeniyi won the 100 regional title in a time of 12.54. Culver junior Denisha Brown was second in 12.78.
Senior Breanna Lemler was the lone Triton athlete to place in the finals. Lemler was sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.44. Her seed time was 1:01.45.
South Bend Riley senior Ayinna Gaines won the 400 in a regional record time of 56.68. Gaines winning performance eclipsed the old regional standard of 57.05 set by Elese Daniel of South Bend Clay in 2009.
Teel also ran a leg of the Valley 4 X 100 relay team that placed eighth in a time of 51.20.
Hailey Nieveen of Lakeland Christian Academy placed seventh in the 100 meter hurdles. The LCA senior posted a time of 17.30. Concord junior Jessica O’Connell won the 100 hurdles in 15.76.
LCA competed in the IHSAA state tournament series for the first time this year.
Wawasee senior Jordan Edington did not record a distance in the shot put competition. Edington was fifth in the shot put at the regional in 2012.
Junior Leah Heckaman of Culver Academies won the shot put with a top throw of 40-10.75.
