NorthWood Edges Warsaw For Another Title
CULVER – For the second time in three weeks, NorthWood played superb golf to trump Warsaw in an invitational. The Panthers used every stroke it could in a 309-310 title march at the Culver Academy Invitational held Saturday at Mystic Hills Golf Club.
The field featured several areas teams that all put together competitive afternoons of golf. Memorial, which is 16-2 on the season and lost to NorthWood by six on its home Christiana Creek course Thursday afternoon, was third at 313 and the Triton Trojans were one stroke back of the Chargers at 314.
NorthWood, ranked No. 11 in the state this week, upended No. 6 Warsaw the final weekend of April to win the Wawasee Invitational.
Senior standout Jon Schram captured medalist honors for Warsaw. The Ball State bound Schram fired a two-under round of 69 to lead the Tigers.
Dylan Gessinger of NorthWood placed second with a 73. Triton senior ace Quentyn Carpenter led the Trojans with a 73, while Tanner Shepherd shot 79.
The event was scored using the four best scores on each hole per team not the four best scores overall for the round.
Jonny Hollar shot an 80 for coach Ben Barkey’s Tigers. Will Petro shot 85, Tim Ahlersmeyer 86 and Evan Cultice 89.
Wawasee, led by matching 79s from Tristen Atwood and Jeffrey Moore, shot a 320 for fifth in the 16-team field.
No. 15 Mishawaka Marian fired a 322 to finish just behind Wawasee while the host Culver Academy were one back of Marian at 323 for seventh overall. Northern Lakes Conference foes Plymouth were ninth at 336.
The final team standings had NorthWood as champions with a 309, followed by Warsaw (310), Elkhart Memorial (313), Triton (314), Wawasee (320), Marian (322), CMA (323), Harrison (325), Plymouth (336), Glenn (339), Michigan City (340), Huntington North (343), Winamac (349), South Bend Adams (355), Logansport (368) and South Bend Riley (374).
Warsaw, still unbeaten in the conference at 3-0, will play a big league match Tuesday versus NorthWood and Goshen at McCormick Creek in Nappanee.
The Warsaw JV team captured top honors Saturday in the Westville Invitational, an event for varsity teams.
The trio of Ryan Cultice, Brandon Eckert and Josh Ahlersmeyer each shot a round of 81 as the Tigers shot 327 as a team to win the 14-team event.
Reid Cameron shot 84 and Jacob Foster 89 for the champions.
New Prairie was second in the invite with a 336.
