Rain Hampers Day Two At Tennis NLC
PLYMOUTH – Rain interrupted the second round of the Northern Lakes Conference girls tennis tournament at the Plymouth Tennis Complex.
All five divisions were able to at least get one match in, some more, some less. The two doubles matches were most affected with three of the four matches needing to resume Friday when match play begins again. Tournament directors announced round two will finish Friday as well as back draws for one and two singles, as well as one and two doubles. Three singles back draws will begin Saturday morning with the rest of the third round matches.
The finals will take place Saturday as brackets begin to fill in. All match play will take place at the Plymouth Tennis Complex.
All five of Warsaw’s courts as well as four of Wawasee’s were able to finish matches Thursday.
At one singles, Wawasee’s Esther Hermann lost to Memorial’s Bailey Denton 6-0, 6-1 while Warsaw’s Sarah Boyle fell to NorthWood’s Emily Hoffman 6-2, 6-1. Hermann and Boyle will meet for seventh place. The championship match in one singles play will feature Miranda Kay of Goshen against Sarah Smith of Northridge.
At two singles, Warsaw’s Jacqueline Sasso took care of Wawasee’s Katy Ashpole 6-2, 6-4 sending Sasso to face Mikayla German of Plymouth for fifth while Ashpole will face Concord’s Hailey Stiver for seventh. The championship match at two singles is undecided as semi-final matches were rained out.
At three singles, Taelor Grose of Memorial ended any hopes for Warsaw to have a champion as Grose beat Lindsay Sciarra 6-4, 6-1, in one of the semi-finals. Grose will wait to find out her opponent in the final, either Emily Hughes of Northridge or Sarah Rush of Goshen, victims of rain. Wawasee’s Priscilla Par was shut out by Holly Angel of Concord, love and love. Par’s next opponent is not set as of Thursday night.
At one doubles, Olivia Wallin and Marley Smith of Warsaw earned a 6-2, 6-1 win against Memorial’s Delaney Gilbert and Haley Stouder. The Tiger duo will next take on Megan Auger and Emily Davis of Concord for fifth, which were 6-1, 6-0 winners over Wawasee’s Sam Prins and Jada Antonides, which will take on Memorial for seventh. Northridge’s Courtney Clark and Olivia Ereksen will represent one half of the doubles championship, waiting on an opponent.
At two doubles, NorthWood’s Taylor Stutzman and Alaina Donegan beat Warsaw’s Mallory Bartel and Mattie Doran 6-1, 6-0 in the only match at two doubles that was able to finish. The Warsaw duo will play in the seventh place match against the losing team from the Memorial-Wawasee matchup, which was halted due to the rain.
