Redskins Topple Tiger Netters
GOSHEN – Two tennis teams at distinctly different ends of the Northern Lakes Conference standings met up Monday.
There were no surprises either in the final outcome.
Host Goshen put the wraps on an outstanding NLC regular season by downing Warsaw 4-1 in girls tennis league play at Goshen Middle School.
The Redskins improve to 11-1 overall and finish 6-1 in NLC action. Warsaw drops to 1-10 overall and completes league play at 1-6.
The bright spot for the Tigers was at No. 3 singles. Senior Lindsay Sciarra, playing just her second match of the season there, topped junior Sarah Rush 6-1, 6-3. Sciarra has gutted out another season through a plethora of pain and injuries.
“I’m extremely thrilled for Lindsay,” said Warsaw coach Rick Orban. “She’s now 2-0 since we moved her to singles last week. She’s earned that spot the rest of the season.”
Goshen, whose lone loss was a 5-0 decision to NLC foe Northridge, wasted no time in taking control Monday. Junior Miranda Kay topped junior Sarah Boyle 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and senior Lisanne Scheffers defeated junior Jacqueline Sasso 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
The Redskins got their clinching point from its No. 2 doubles duo of senior Leah Shetler and sophomore Kayci Troyer. The pair beat juniors Mattie Doran and Mallory Bartel 6-1, 6-1.
“Goshen is good,” Orban said. “They are extremely deep and talented. Their No. 1 player is very good and their No. 2 is very solid. She just does not miss.”
The Tigers also got a strong effort at No. 1 doubles from the team of seniors Olivia Wallin and Marley Smith. The duo battled back from an early deficit before losing 7-5, 6-3 to seniors Emily Halley and Ali Peters.
“I’m extremely pleased with the way Olivia and Marley played tonight,” said Orban. “They were down 3-0 in that first set and almost forced a tiebreaker. They just got tired in that second set.”
Orban, now in his 13th season, has seen his team struggle all year. The Tigers graduated just one player from last year’s team that went 11-7 and placed second in the NLC. Warsaw’s lone win this spring was a 5-0 final over NLC foe Wawasee on April 25.
“It’s been a long season with the awful weather at the start and injuries,” noted Orban. “We have not been able to overcome those things for whatever reason.”
Both Warsaw and Goshen will take part in the NLC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday at Plymouth.
Orban, whose team will host the sectional May 15-17, knows what he wants to see from his team.
“I’m hoping for a little more focus, some smarter play and to build some confidence going into the sectional,” said Orban about his goals for the NLC Tourney.
Warsaw won the junior varsity competition Monday 8-1.
Winners for the Warsaw JV were Rachel Alexander (No. 1) and Blair Findlay (No. 2) in singles play.
Also victorious for the Tiger JV were the doubles teams of Abbi Baum and Camille Kerlin (No. 1), Anna Hall and Rosalia Fleming (No. 2), Shelby Roberts and Mallorie Stiver (No. 3), Danielle Straights and Greer Smith (No. 4), Mackenzie Riley and Olivia Tucker (No. 5) and Ashley Neubaum and Sherry Wong (No. 6).
