Lancers Excel At League Track Meet
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Grace College track and field program saved its best for last as they competed at the Crossroads League Track and Field Championships over the weekend.
The Lancers earned numerous All-League honors to go along with one NAIA national qualifier and a school record.
“I can’t say enough about our effort this weekend. There were just a ton of season-best performances,” said Grace head coach Jeff Raymond. “This has been a tough season because of the weather, but I’m proud of the way the team kept working. This weekend gave them the chance to excel, and they certainly did.”
The men’s 4×800 relay team of Jonathan Rex, Lance Taylor, Ben Drew and Donovan Graham met the NAIA national qualifying standard with their second-place finish of 7:46.97.
Taylor and Graham teamed up with Seth Booker and Zach Speckman in the 4×400 relay to defend last year’s title for Grace, winning the 2013 race in a time of 3:20.56.
Taylor also won first place in the 400 race in 49.70, and Graham earned All-League (top three) honors in the 800 in a season-best time of 1:56.46.
In just his second collegiate attempt, freshman Drew Perrin surprised with a third-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 41-feet-6.
The women’s 4×800 relay foursome of Jenna McClellan, Allison Zylstra, Alexis Nelson and Rachel Fehring recorded the fastest time in Grace’s history when they raced past the finish line in 10:09.87
Kaitlyn Mikel was also third in the hammer throw for the Lady Lancers with a season-best toss of 149-2.
Nathan Brown was the final All-League performer for the Lancers in the long jump at 21-9.
“Donny [Graham] and Lance [Taylor] just had a super weekend, which was great to see,” Raymond continued. “Our women only had one All-League performer [Mikel], but we scored points in all types of events: throws, jumps, hurdles, sprints and mid-distance. That’s a solid all-around team performance.”
Other strong performances for Grace include: Speckman (400 hurdles) and Sabrina Whitaker (high jump) in fourth place, Whitaker (100 hurdles), Ben Drew (1500) and Erin McPherson (shot put) in fifth place, Elaynne Speckman (400 hurdles) in sixth place, Jo Boren (400) in seventh place, and Kaitlyn Faulkner (triple jump) and Rebekah Younkin (discus) in eighth place.
