Advisors Ponder Station Remodel, PERF
Progress of the Turkey Creek Fire Territory’s remodeling process was on the minds of the Turkey Creek Township Trustee Advisory Board Monday evening during the monthly meeting with Township Trustee Barb Griffith at fire Station 2.
A zoning hearing is scheduled with the Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals, 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18 at Syracuse Town Hall.
TC Fire Chief Mickey Scott said it is possible that sprinklers may be required in the remodeling of Station 1 on North Huntington Street. Architectural drawing have been obtained and will be submitted for bids at a later date.
A “common wage” hearing will be held during the afternoon of Monday, April 15. The time is still unknown. Scott reported that the final information has been received on “Civil” and “77” PERF proposals. The board felt the township budget would be better suited to a Civil PERF but discussion is ongoing. No final decisions have been made but the state deadline for PERF is May 1.
The Civil PERF Pendsion Plan from the Indiana Public Retirement System offers the township options. One is that the department contribute 10 percent and the enployees contribute three percent.
Another would be that the department can choose to pay the 3 percent for the employee as a “New Money Pick-Up” or the department can pay the same through a “Salary Reduction Pick-Up.” The latter would not be included in the gross income of the employee for tax purposes until these funds are distributed through a pension benefit or a lump sum payment.
The township advisory board approved the purchase agreement for .68 acres of land for an addition to Union Cemetery on East 1000 North. The board had previously approved buying the property for $13,700. Also decided was the completion of the installation of the Weybright Cemetery.
The board has as one of its goals continued improvement of each township cemetery including pathways, restoration of gravestones and land surveying in a progressive model. This project will be budgeted for each year. The township does not own Syracuse Cemetery, which has its own board of directors.
Attending the meeting were advilsors Dennis Darr, Kimberly Miller-Cates and Trustee Griffith. Also present were fire and EMS personnel Scott, Derek Patterson, Bob Tinkey, Dave Santos and Nick Stickle. The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at Station 2, 8138 E. McClintic Rd., Syracuse.
