Johns Named Triton Football Coach
BOURBON – John Johns is the new man who will direct the fortunes of the Triton High School football program.
Johns was hired Monday night as the 15th coach of the Trojans’ football program at the School Board of Trustees meeting.
Johns comes to Triton from Evansville Harrison High School, where he has served as the Defensive Coordinator and Strength and Conditioning coach since 2009.
“I’m very excited to hire coach Johns,” said Triton athletic director Mason McIntyre in a release issued by the school. “John brings with him a successful playing and coaching career. He will fit well with our program and our school. I’m expecting to see great results from coach Johns both in the classroom and on the field.”
Johns is a 1989 graduate of Turkey Run High School. He then went on to play football at Ball State University.
Johns became his coaching career at Tri-County High School from 1998-2006. He then coached at North Vermillion High School from 2006-09, including as head coach from 2007-09. Johns then moved to his current position at Evansville Harrison.
“I am very pleased with the opportunity to work at Triton,” said Johns in the release. “The school has a rich history of both academic and athletic success. The student athletes at Triton have impressed me greatly.”
Johns, who will teach junior high history at Triton, replaces Rodney Younis. Younis resigned following the 2012 season after coaching the Trojans for the last 11 years. Younis was 40-82 at Triton with Class 1-A sectional championships in 2007 and 208.
Johns takes over a team that finished 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the Northern State Conference last fall. Triton’s lone win last fall was a 21-10 victory over NSC foe LaVille. The Trojans lost just six seniors from that team.
“They are a very capable group,” said Johns of his new team. “And because of that, I see great things for our program in the future. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have this opportunity.”
