Concord Sweeps, Goshen Edges Wawasee
SYRACUSE — Concord didn’t need a full bus to bring enough talent to pick up two wins. The depth of Goshen was just what it needed to get a win over Wawasee.
Concord brought just a mini bus full of girls track athletes Tuesday night, but swept both Wawasee, 75-56, and Goshen, 70-62. The Lady Redskins, armed with a roster of over three dozen athletes, needed every one of them to clip the Lady Warriors, 69-61, to complete the Northern Lakes Conference triangular at Warrior Field.
Wawasee were winners of five events, with Jen Slabaugh claiming two of them in the 1600 (5:59.15) and the 3200 (12:54.29).
Ruby Minnick cleared 15’01” to master the long jump in what was a really good night for the Lady Warriors in the field.
Caitlin Clevenger led a massive showing for Wawasee in the discus, tossing the frisbee 99’00.5″, fronting a Wawasee group that took six of the top seven distances in the event. Jordan Edington tossed the shot put 36’09.5″ for the win, which Wawasee took four of the top five spots in the event for a tour de force in throws Tuesday.
“The throwers really did some nice things tonight,” said Wawasee head coach Scott Lancaster. “We had some class records broken, and given what we did tonight, should have four girls throwing about 100 feet here soon. That’s a real plus for us.”
Concord would win all the speed and hurdle events en route to eight top showings. Mariah DeFreese and Jessica O’Connell were both four-event winners to lead the Lady Minutemen. Goshen would take the 800, the 4×800 and the pole vault, with Leah Kissinger involved in the 4×800 and winning the 800.
The meet Tuesday night was the first of the season for Wawasee, having its first four scheduled events scratched in March because of the unforgiving weather. Lancaster was just happy to get back to work.
“The places where you normally would struggle from not being outside, like the long jump, we had success with it today,” Lancaster said. “Ruby went out and did well. Our throws were really strong today. Good signs heading into more conference stuff next week.”
Wawasee will get back to work in the NLC next Wednesday with a roadie, joining Elkhart Memorial at Plymouth for another conference triangular.
