Yeo, Bloom Lauded By AP
INDIANAPOLIS – Triton senior star Clay Yeo added yet another honor to his prep basketball resume Tuesday.
Yeo, who led the Trojans to a Class 1-A state runner-up finish in March, was named to the third team All-State list by The Associated Press.
Yeo, a 6-6 guard bound for Valparaiso University, led the Trojans in virtually every statistical category in a 20-6 season. He averaged 26 points-per-game and finished his prep career as the all-time leading scorer in Marshall County boys basketball history with 1,992 points.
Yeo scored 26 points, including 19 in the fourth quarter, in Triton’s 55-50 loss to Borden in the state championship contest. The Trojans were also state runner-up in 2011.
Headlining the first team choices on the AP All-State squad is Demetrius Jackson. The Mishawaka Marian senior guard, who has signed to play at Notre Dame, averaged 26.8 ppg his senior season. Jackson, a strong candidate for Mr. Basketball honors, is scheduled to play in the McDonald’s All-American game tonight (April 3) in Chicago. He is the lone boys player from Indiana selected to play in the contest in the United Center. The game will be televised tonight live on ESPN at 9:30 p.m.
Jackson, an explosive 6-1 backcourt star, also averaged 5.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.6 steals per game during the 2012-13 season. He won he skills contest on Monday as part of the McDonald’s All-American game festivities.
Warsaw standout Jared Bloom was among a handful of area players were also honored by the AP. Bloom was an honorable mention selection to the all-state team. The senior guard led the Tigers in scoring and helped Warsaw win a Class 4-A sectional title. Bloom is still uncommitted on his college choice.
Named as high honorable mention choices were seniors Franko House of Concord, Markese McGuire of Elkhart Memorial and Austin Torres of Penn. House will play at Ball State, McGuire at UIC and Torres at Notre Dame. South Bend Riley senior Brock Cosey was an honorable mention pick.
The AP first team also includes senior Zak Irvin (Hamilton Southeastern) and Michael Volovic (Carmel) and junior Trevon Blueitt (Indianapolis Park Tudor) and Trey Lyles (Indianapolis Tech). Irvin has committed to Michigan, while Volovic plans to walk-on at Butler.
The second team features seniors Mike Crawford (Tipton), Bryson Scott (Fort Wayne Northrop) and Darryl Baker (Jeffersonville) and junior Ja’Quan Lyle (Evansville Bosse) and James Blackmon (Fort Wayne Luers). Crawford has committed to St. Louis, Scott to Purdue and Blackmon to Indiana.
The third team includes Yeo, along with seniors Collin Hartman (Indianapolis Cathedral), V.J. Beachem (New Haven) and Blake Simmons (Castle) and junior Bryant McIntosh (Greensburg). Hartman is bound for Indiana, while Simmons will play at Evansville, Beachem at Notre Dame and McIntosh has committed to Indiana State.
