Penn’s Lutz Earns Spot On All-Stars
INDIANAPOLIS – Taylor Lutz, a senior standout for Penn, was one of 14 players selected as Indiana All-Stars Friday.
The prestigious list of senior girls basketball players was released Friday by the IBCA.
Lutz, a 5-8 guard, helped the Kingsmen go 19-5 during the 2012-13 campaign. Lutz, who averaged 10 points-per-game, also led coach Kristi Kaniewski’s team to a Class 4-A sectional championship before losing 49-42 to Warsaw in a regional semifinal.
Lutz, whose older sister Ashley plays for Bethel College, was a starter on Penn’s Class 4-A state runner-up team in 2011. She will play at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.
Stephanie Mavunga, a 6-4 forward from Brownsburg, won the 2013 Miss Basketball title in a close vote. The North Carolina recruit, who averaged 23.2 ppg. her senior season, received 79 votes in balloting of coaches and media members statewide.
Taya Reimer, a standout forward from Hamilton Southeastern, was runner-up for Miss Basketball with 74 votes. Reimer, a 6-3 performer, averaged 20.7 ppg. and will play at Notre Dame next season.
Both Mavunga and Reimer have been selected as McDonald’s and WBCA All-Americans nationally.
The Indiana All-Stars are slated to play four games in June. They will face the Indiana Junior All-Stars in exhibition games June 10 and 12 with the sites and times for those games still to be determined. The squad will then play the Kentucky All-Stars in girls/boys doubleheaders on June 14 at Freedom Hall in Louisville and June 15 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
A pair of other area players were tabbed as All-Stars. Andrijana Cvitkovic, a 6-3 forward from Culver Academy, and Ariana Simmons, a 5-11 guard/forward from Fort Wayne South Side, both are on the team. Cvitkovic will play at Dayton and Simmons at IPFW.
Also named to the team were Celeste Edwards (5-11, guard, North Central), Ally Lehman (5-10, guard, Indian Creek), Bridget Perry (6-2, guard/forward, Roncalli), Caitlyn Tolen (5-11, guard, Benton Central), Katie Curtis (5-6, guard, Lebanon), Jill Morrison (5-8, guard, Winchester), Rhagen Smith (6-2, forward, Sullivan), Dakota Weatherford (5-5, guard, Hamilton Heights) and Jenn Anderson (6-4, center, Westfield).
Edwards will play collegiately at Dayton, Lehman at Northern Illinois, Perry at Purdue, Tolen at IUPUI, Curtis at Colgate, Morrison at Ball State, Smith at Indiana State, Weatherword at Evansville and Anderson at Indiana.
Mark Hurt of Mooresville will serve as head coach of the girls all-star team. Juanita Goodwell of Fort Wayne South Side, who was Class 4-A state runner-up, and Julie Meeks of Sullivan were selected as assistant coaches.
The All-Star team, after the Miss Basketball selection, was finalized by All-Star game director Charlie Hall after consultation with coaches and reviewing votes by coaches and media members statewide.
