UPDATE: Car v. Train Blocking Warsaw Crossings
At about 8 a.m. this morning a vehicle was struck by a train causing several railroad crossings to close. The result was backed up traffic in downtown Warsaw.
According to Warsaw Police, railroad crossings will likely be re-opened before noon. Norfolk & Southern supervisors have to examine the 132-car train before it can be moved.
The crash occurred at the Market Street crossing but pushed the vehicle to Main Street where it was finally dislodged from the train’s engine. The Market Street crossing does have working train signals, but no crossing gates.
Sandra Casanova, 42, of Fort Wayne, was driving her 2004 Lexus SUV when she was struck by the train on the drivers side of her vehicle. Though Casanova did not sustain any obvious visible injuries or complain of pain, she was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital to be checked out.
Casanova stated she did not see the activated crossing lights and bell and did not hear the train whistle. Police have confirmed that crossing warnings were functioning properly at the time of the accident.
