Red Cross Offers Livesaving Tornado App
Just in time for National Severe Weather Preparedness Week (March 3-9), The American Red Cross has launched a new, free app that will alert you to tornado warnings in your area.
The official Tornado App includes preparedness tips, but most importantly it will create a siren alert if there is a tornado warning, issued by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in your area. Because many tornadoes occur in the overnight hours, the audible siren alert can save lives.
The app will also give an “All Clear!” alert when it is safe again.
The Tornado app puts everything you need to know and prepare for a tornado in the palm of your hand. With interactive quizzes and simple step-by-step advice it’s never been easier to be ready.
To get the free app, call **REDCROSS (**73327677) from your mobile phone and you will receive a link to download the app to your phone. You can also download it directly from the iTunes or Google Play app stores.
With the app you will also get information on location-based shelters operated by the Red Cross, and the Toolkit offers a stobe light, flashlight and audible alert function so you can be found in the event of an emergency.
The Tornado App also lets you see how many tornadoes have occurred in your area, and you’ll learn the difference between a warning and an alert.
The free app is available in English and Spanish and is for the iPhone, iPad and Android smart phone and tablet users.
