North Webster Public Library News
As March blows in with Old Man Winter’s last hurrah, the North Webster Public Library is gearing up for some “hurrah’ of its own with three month-long contests starting March 1.
March Madness for Men gives the guys a chance to be heard. When guys check out any book, audio book or movie during March and tell us what they like about NWPL, they can enter their name in a drawing to win a free duffel bag full of guy stuff. The more times they check out items throughout the month, the more chances they have to win.
Everybody can get a piece of the action in the New Item Contest. The NWPL continually updates its collection with new books, movies and other items. So every time you check out three new items during March, you get to enter the drawing for a prize basket full of goodies. The more times you check out new items, the more chances you have to win. You’ll find a large selection of new items showcased on the bookcase at the front of the NWPL.
The winners of both the March Madness and New Item drawings will be announced at the National Library Week Celebration held at 6:30 p.m. April 18, and they must be present to claim their prizes.
It’s also time for the library’s annual Cemetery Walk Essay Contest. This contest is your chance to commemorate someone from the past who is interred in the North Webster Cemetery. Perhaps it’s a departed loved one or an interesting person you know about. Simply write a short essay, giving a brief history of the person’s life, and submit it to the Local History and Genealogy Center Director Beth Smith by March 31. The winning essays will be announced at the National Library Week Celebration on April 18, and the persons written about in those essays will be portrayed during the annual Cemetery Walk on Sept. 8.
If you’re interested in history, you’ll want to come hear local resident Pirkko Miller relate her childhood experiences of living in Finland during war time. Mrs. Miller will be the guest speaker at the Glean Team meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 6. The public is invited to attend and learn what it was like to grow up in a war torn country during World War II.
For those concerned with the here and now, a Pinterest for Beginners Class will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 7. Instructor Katie Longacre will show you how to set up your account and get started on Pinterest, a popular online content sharing service. You’ll learn how to pin photos and items of interest to your virtual “pinboard,” follow other users, and share photos and ideas. The class is free and no advance sign-up is needed. Just show up and start having fun on Pinterest.
