Warsaw Frosh Take Tourney Title
PLYMOUTH – The Warsaw boys freshman basketball team capped its 2012-13 season in style by earning another championship Saturday.
The frosh Tigers topped host Plymouth 34-29 in the semifinals and then crushed Concord 47-28 in the title tilt to win the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament.
Riley Rhoades had nine points and seven points as the Tigers overcame a four-point halftime deficit to beat the Pilgrims.
Paul Marandet turned in a strong all-around effort in the semifinal win with eight points, three rebounds, three steals and four assists. Luke Wilson had eight points, six rebounds and three steals for the winners.
Tyler Packard had four points and Evan Schmidt three in the win. Xavier Lynch scored two points and Ben Linky dished out a pair of assists in the semifinal victory.
The championship contest saw everyone contribute for the champion Tigers as they avenged a regular-season loss to the Minutemen. Warsaw had dropped a 30-26 final at Concord on Jan. 17.
Packard powered the Tigers in the championship game win with 10 points. Rhoades had nine points and three steals and Marandet put up eight points to go with four assists.
Linky drained a pair of triples to score six points for the Tigers, who trailed by two points at halftime to Concord before roaring back for the 19-point win. Wilson had four points and five rebounds and Bailey Ness also scored four points.
Schmidt finished with three points, two rebounds and two steals for Warsaw. Lucas Cone had two points and a rebound, while Lamain Rucker scored one point and Matt Anthony grabbed two rebounds. Lynch and Caleb Garner each nabbed two steals for the Tigers.
Warsaw finished its season 18-3 and won its own holiday tournament, along with the NLC regular-season title to go with the NLC Tournament championship on Saturday.
