Tiger Seniors Shine On Their Night
WARSAW – It was some Senior Night Thursday for the Class of 2013 members of the Warsaw girls basketball team.
The talented group went out in style in their final regular-season home game by routing South Bend Riley 77-23.
Lindsay Baker, one of five seniors for the Class 4-A No. 9 Tigers, led the way by tying a program record and scoring a game-high 24 points.
Baker, the do-it-all guard for Warsaw who has signed to play at the University of Toledo, canned eight treys in the win to tie the single-season mark set by Kelci Freds during the 2009-10 season. Freds, now a junior at Taylor University, hit eight triples in a win over Wawasee. Freds, a four-year standout who began her collegiate career at the University of South Carolina Upstate, holds the program mark for career 3-pointers with 180 and for a single season with 60.
Baker went 8-of-14 from distance Thursday night as the Tigers hit 13-of-24 treys in the win.
Senior Jennifer Walker-Crawford scored 14 points and junior Nikki Grose and senior Melanie Holladay 11 each as Warsaw completed a 19-1 regular season.
Seniors Sarah Ray and Gabby Monroy also started Thursday night for the Tigers as coach Michelle Harter went with an all-senior first five. Ray had seven points, three rebounds and two assists and fan favorite Monroy, a standout on the successful Warsaw girls soccer squad, had two points, four rebounds and three steals.
“This senior group is very special,” said fifth-year Warsaw coach Harter. “They’ve put so much time and effort into improving themselves as players. They play with such heart and desire and they are leaders, both on and off the court.
“The thing about them is that they are so unselfish and you can see that in how they play. That’s why we’re successful. They genuinely care about each other and the team and they are willing to sacrifice to help the team. You have to have good senior leadership. It’s important and we have it.
“It was very emotional for me. I always enjoy my seniors. It’s just been great for me watching them grow into young ladies and seeing them excel. They are just a great group of young ladies.”
The Tigers, who suffered their first loss by a 34-30 final at Class 3-A power and Northern Lakes Conference foe NorthWood Saturday night, left no doubt from the start Thursday night. The hosts led 15-1 after the first quarter and 34-3 at halftime versus the Wildcats, who finish the regular season at 4-16.
Warsaw, which won the NLC championship at 6-1, just missed being the first undefeated WCHS girls team since the 1989-90 squad.
“I’m really not surprised,” said Harter of going 19-1 after a 16-5 finish last season. “I knew the potential this team had and I knew they were capable of this. It’s still a little surprising though to be 19-1 due to the competition we play.”
Warsaw shot 27-of-58 overall from the field in the win Thursday night. The Tigers only had six turnovers in the contest and held Riley to an 8-of-36 field goal shooting effort.
Quadira Smith scored nine points and Jessica Rife had five to lead Riley, which lost 71-28 to Warsaw at home last season. The Wildcats own wins this season over LaPorte LaLumiere, Elkhart Central, Gary 21st Century and South Bend Clay.
Warsaw won the junior varsity game by a 35-8 final Thursday night.
Warsaw (19-1) plays Elkhart Memorial Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the opening game of the Concord Sectional. Riley (4-16) faces South Bend Washington Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the first contest of the Penn Sectional.
