New Power Line Creates Jobs, Reliable Energy
NIPSCO has announced the construction of a new 100-mile electric transmission line that will span from the Reynolds and Burr Oak’s substations on to Hipple substation near Topeka.
The Reynolds Topeka Electric System Improvement Project, which is one of 17 similar projects lead by the Midwest Independent System Operator, is a six year project that NIPSCO claims will strengthen Indiana’s electric system and provide improved access to wind and solar renewable resources.
In addition to the aforementioned benefits, NIPSCO also states that the company is committed to hire local labor first for the project. The company hopes to benefit many residents, business, and workers through the purchase of materials and labor.
NIPSCO also promises that the project will not necessitate property owners to sell their properties to the company, instead NIPSCO will be purchasing easements. The purchasing of easements will allow the company the right to use the land for building and maintaining the transmission line while allowing the property owner to continue using the property as long as it does not interfere with facilities and maintenance.
The precise route for the line, which will ultimately connect NIPSCO’s Reynolds, Burr Oak and Hipple substations, has yet to be decided upon. However, given the rural area surrounding the project, the route is expected to avoid cities and towns. Due to the many factors NIPSCO must take into consideration in setting an exact route, the company first plans to examine public input as well as historic, cultural and environmental impacts in the area. The company will also be meeting with government and regulatory agencies to receive assistance in determining a final route.
According to a NIPSCO statement, “The project is currently in the Study Phase, which means we are looking at an area to conduct further studies to determine the best route for the project. Public input is a critical component of this project and we are committed to keeping you informed throughout the project. We will be hosting several public open houses in 2013 to solicit input on the project route, answer questions, and to address concerns … Public input is a critical component of this project and we are committed to keeping you informed.”
NIPSCO will be answering questions and addressing concerns as well as soliciting public feedback on the project during a series of open house events throughout the months of February and July.
Due to the large-scale of the project, NIPSCO has currently placed a tentative date of 2018 for the project’s conclusion, however, the company does state it hopes to set a more specific date by the end of the year.
