Hot-Shooting Sparks Grace Victory
AMHERST, N.Y. – The Grace College men’s basketball team wrapped up the 2012 portion of its schedule with a victory Friday.
A red-hot shooting performance carried the NAIA Division II No. 9 Lancer past Wilfrid Laurier 92-76.
Grace, in improving to 10-4, shot 52 percent from the field and hit 18-of-21 free throws in the win.
The Lancers led 48-41 at halftime on the strength of a 20-of-35 shooting effort in the opening half. Elliot Smith led the way with 16 points, including connecting on four treys in the first half of play.
Smith led coach Jim Kessler’s squad with 19 points. Bruce Grimm Jr. netted 17 points, while Greg Miller had 14 and Jared Treadway 13. Kyle Fillman and Karl Columbus each added eight points. Miller also grabbed nine rebounds in the win.
Wilfrid Laurier drops to 3-12.
The Lancers dropped an 88-81 final to Daemen College Thursday night.
Daemen, which improved to 13-4, hit 18-of-22 free throws while Grace was just 5-of-6 from the line. The winners also outscored the Lancers 24-10 in bench points.
Grimm Jr. canned 27 points and Miller had 21 points and 11 rebounds to pace Grace. Columbus scored 10 points and Smith had eight points and seven assists.
Grace returns to action Jan. 2 with a conference game at Spring Arbor.
