Council Approves KCSD Evidence Technician
Due to increased crime in the county, sheriff Rocky Goshert asked the Kosciusko County Council Thursday night to approve a new position within the department. Goshert asked to be appoint detective Josh Spangle as the department’s administrative sergeant to serve as the evidence technician.
Spangle is already serving in the role without a salary to compensate him for the additional hours and responsibilities. According to Goshert, Spangle has had extensive training in evidence collection and is already the officer who is primarily called to crime scenes when the collection of such things as fingerprints and DNA are necessary.
“It’s important to get convictions to collect the evidence and it takes a person who is highly trained and motivated,” said Goshert, noting Spangle has proven he is that person. While the position of evidence technician will not be full-time now, Goshert told the council, “I think very shortly it will be full-time … because of the growth in the amount of crimes and the evidence now being collected.”
The council – in the absence of Larry Teghtmeyer and Brad Tandy – approved the the sheriff’s request to establish the administrative sergeant’s position. The pay for the rank promotion is already budgeted for 2013.
In a final order of business for the year, the council made the following board appointments for 2013:
Alcoholic Beverage Commission – Kenneth Johnson
Kosciusko Economic Development Corp. – Bob Sanders
Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission – Larry Coplen
Syracuse Library Board – Randall Girod
PTABOA – Susan Myrick and Brock Ostrom
Kosciusko County Redevelopment Commission – Larry Teghtmeyer and Bill Warren
Solid Waste Board – Jon Garber
Wage Committee – Brad Tandy and Larry Teghtmeyer
The next meeting of the county council will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10.
