Man Killed When Moped Hit Head On
A Nappanee man riding his moped north of Syracuse was killed last night when he was hit head on by a small SUV.
Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Crash Investigation Team is investigated the accident which happened at 6:47 p.m. on CR 50 east of CR 35.
According to police, a 2005 Jeep Liberty was westbound on CR 50 and passed a horse-drawn buggy when it collided head-on with the eastbound moped.
The impact killed 20-year-old Jeremy Yates of Nappanee. Yates was pronounced dead at the scene.
Occupants in the SUV were Melissa Yoder, 28, of Ligonier, who sustained upper back pain; William Perry, 20, of Goshen, who sustained a major laceration to his head and an unknown head injury; and Randel Purtell, 20, of Milford who was reported to have unknown head and back injuries. All three were airlifted to hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
Police say the driver of the SUV has not yet been determined and no enforcement action was taken at the scene.
The accident remains under investigation
