Balance Leads Lancers To Victory
WINONA LAKE – A well-balanced attack paced Grace’s women’s basketball team to an 80-66 win over Holy Cross in their 2012 season opener Saturday.
Juaneice Jackson led all players with 22 points as 10 players scored for the Lady Lancers (1-0).
Grace used a 13-2 run in the first half to gain separation on the scoreboard between themselves and the Saints (0-1).
The Lady Lancers held the Saints to 32 percent shooting from the field in the first half to take a 34-28 lead at halftime.
Holy Cross managed to cut Grace’s lead to four points a few minutes into the second half, but the Lady Lancers ended the Saints’ threat with a 14-4 spurt. The Saints would not push any closer than eight points for the duration of the game.
All 10 Lady Lancers who saw playing time managed to score. Jackson was the standout performer of the game by making 8-of-14 from the field. She filled the stat sheet with 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.
Grace outrebounded Holy Cross by 11. The Lady Lancers tallied 17 offensive boards as well.
Allison Kauffman registered the only double-double of the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jayla Starks turned in an all-around effort with 6 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Freshman Gabby Bryant scored eight points as the starting point guard, and fellow freshman Sarah Feasby added eight points and four rebounds.
The Lady Lancers connected on 73 percent of their free throw attempts and 41 percent of their field goals in the win.
Grace resumes action on Tuesday when they travel to face IU-South Bend at 7 p.m.
