Vikings Whip Whitko, Earn TRC Title
AKRON – The Tippecanoe Valley football team exacted a sweet measure of revenge on league foe Whitko Friday night.
In the process, the Vikings earned a share of the Three Rivers Conference championship.
The Vikings got a huge performance from quarterback Ben Shriver and standout playmaker Justin Gunter to whip the Wildcats 55-14 in the regular-season and TRC finale Friday night.
Valley, which had to share the TRC title with Rochester last year after losing 24-15 at Whitko in the season finale, clicked on all cylinders this time around to earn the TRC crown for coach Jeff Shriver.
The Vikings finish the regular season at 7-2 overall and share the TRC championship at 6-1 with Rochester again. The Zebras beat North Miami 31-21 Friday night in another TRC clash.
Valley, which beat Rochester and lost at North Miami last week, claims its first back-to-back TRC titles since 1993-94 with the dominating win.
Shriver, the league’s top signal caller, hit on 9-9 throws Friday night for 264 yards. The junior fired three touchdown passes, connecting with Mason Teel on scoring strikes of 47 and 45 yards and hooking up with Nolan Sponseller on a 35-yard touchdown play.
Gunter ran for 129 yards on 13 carries and found the end zone three times for the hosts on runs of 15, five and 48 yards.
The Vikings piled up 506 yards of total offense in the rout, 264 passing and 242 on the ground.
Valley led 21-7 after the opening period and 35-14 at halftime. The hosts added a 20-point third period for the 55-14 final.
Dan Miller scored on an eight-yard run and Jared Littlejohn on a nine-yarder for Valley. Tanner Andrews had three receptions for 53 yards.
Tanne Hughes scored on a two-yard run and Conner Stouder on a nine-yard run for the Wildcats. Hughes gained 51 yards on 14 carries and Devin Gerding added 36 on nine attempts for Whitko. Alex Stoddard was 8-18 passing for 87 yards for the Wildcats.
Whitko finishes the regular season at 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the TRC.
Valley plays at West Noble and Whitko hosts Garrett in Class 3-A first-round sectional games next Friday night.
