Warsaw Sports Wrap – Sept. 22
Jake Poyner raced to a second-place finish Saturday to lead the Warsaw boys cross country team in the Culver Academies Invitational.
Senior standout Poyner covered the course in 15:28 as the No. 4 Tigers earned a seventh-place team finish in the field of 41 teams.
The outstanding duo of junior Ellis Coon and senior Robert Murphy took fifth and 17th overall individually in the race. Coon clocked in at 15:35 and Murphy at 15:56 for coach Jim Mills’ squad.
Senior Brysten James placed 84th in a time of 16:38 for WCHS. Ismael Calderon was 143rd in 17:18, followed by Tyler Houvener in 154th (17:24) and Nate Haller in 179th (17:34) in the varsity division.The Tigers, led by the trio of Owen Glogovsky, Daniel Messenger and Michael Compton, were impressive in the freshmen/sophomore race. The Tigers earned a second place team finish among 27 teams.
Glogovsky led Warsaw with a sixth place individual finish in a time of 17:00. Messenger placed seventh in 17:10 and Compton was eighth in 17:11. Cam Hoskins finished 21st in 17:34, followed by teammates Dominic Kurosky in 26th (17:34), Matt Anthony in 36th (17:54) and Jacob Deboest in 41st (18:00).
Warsaw looks to win the Northern Lakes Conference regular-season title Tuesday. The Tigers, who are 5-0 in the NLC, face Northridge and NorthWood in a league meet at Stauffer Park in Nappanee. Warsaw then competes in the NLC Meet Sept. 29 at Ox Bow Park.

Volleyball Team Third In Own Tourney
Jamie Lacheta led the way Saturday as the Warsaw volleyball team continued its stellar season with a third-place finish in its own invitational.
Lacheta, a senior and Divisioin I prospect, slammed a team-high 31 kills on the day as the host Tigers posted a 3-1 record. Warsaw defeated Prairie Heights 25-15, 25-14, Class 2-A No. 7 Muncie Burris 25-20, 22-25, 15-4 and then Class 2-A No. 8 Southwood 25-19, 25-19 in the third-place match. Lafayette Jeff topped the Tigers 7-25, 25-23, 15-7.
Alex Sanchez also had a big day for the Tigers. The senior libero had 35 digs and eight aces, tying Lacheta for team-high honors in both categories. Senior Sam Jensen had seven aces, three blocks and 15 kills for the Tigers. Katie Voelz had a team-high eight blocks and 25 kills.
Junior Emily Poe powered down 19 kills for coach Mike Howard’s team. Senior setter Chloe Hubner totaled 98 assists.
Warsaw improves to 16-4 on the season. The Tigers host Fort Wayne Snider Tuesday and then entertain NorthWood Thursday for a huge conference match. Warsaw and NorthWood are both a perfect 5-0 in Northern Lakes Conference play. The Panthers, who received votes in the latest Class 3-A poll, improved to 20-3 overall Saturday by going 4-0 to win the Bremen Invitational.
