Grace Earns First Win Over Goshen
GOSHEN – Grace’s women’s tennis team has steadily improved since the start of their 2012 campaign. They capped off their progress with a 5-0 victory in a shortened match against Goshen on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (1-5; 1-5 CL) swept all three doubles matches and clinched their first victory of 2012 thanks to Kristin Cassidy at No. 1 singles and Nicole Beguin at No. 3 singles.
Due to inclement weather, the match was played on two indoor courts at Goshen. The Lady Lancers won the first five points of the match on Saturday, and the remainder of the singles matches were shortened to single sets.
Cassidy and Taryn Wuensch pulled out a tough 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles, and Beguin and Janelle Hess eased away for an 8-2 win at No. 2.
Sarah Hinkel and Esther Smith completed Grace’s sweep in doubles play with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
After dropping her first set 6-3, Cassidy recovered quickly to win 6-4, 6-2 at the top singles position for Grace.
Beguin clinched the win with a decisive 6-1, 6-4 score at No. 3 singles.
The Lady Lancers won each of the remaining one-set singles matches. Wuensch won 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Hess won 6-4 at No. 4, Hinkel won 6-1 at No. 5, and Smith blanked her opponent 6-0 at No. 6.
Grace will hope to start a winning streak when they welcome Huntington University to Miller Field on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match.
