Grace College Welcomed Christian Author
Grace College welcomed Dr. Rick Ostrander, provost of Cornerstone University and author of “Why College Matters to God: Faithful Learning and Christian Higher Education” to its campus late last month.
During his visit, Ostrander spoke to the Freshman Foundations class, where his book was required reading, in the undergraduate chapel service, and in an informal faculty session.
Students and faculty were able to meet Ostrander to ask questions and gain perspective on the liberal arts approach to Christian education.
Dr. Jared Burkholder, director of Grace’s Office of Faith, Learning, and Scholarship, was thrilled to have Ostrander visit the campus, specifically praising his chapel presentation.
“He prodded us toward a Christocentric approach to learning that should include large doses of humility, meaningful relationships, and restful contemplation,” Burkholder said. “Ostrander is a respected figure for his contributions to the history of evangelicalism in America, in addition to his writing on Christian higher education. His visit meshed well with our desire to be a place of thoughtful reflection where we challenge students and faculty—through events like this—to examine their calling within the academy. I was very thankful that Jacqueline Shram, Aaron Crabtree, and Jim Swanson had the insight to bring Dr. Ostrander to our campus. ”
