Warsaw Sports Wrap – Sept. 15
Zack Tucker tallied three goals and a fast start propelled the Warsaw boys soccer team to a 7-1 victory Saturday evening over Lakeland Christian Academy.
The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in Class 2-A, scored three goals in the first 12 minutes of the non-conference contest in Winona Lake.
Sam Albritten scored in the first minute, off an assist from Nathan Koble, to set the tone. Tucker then scored a pair of goals, one in the third minute and another in the 12th, to make it 3-0. Diego Lopez and Miguel Rivera assisted on the scores.
Caleb Klusman had a goal in the final half, assisted by Albritten, followed by another goal by Tucker and two goals by Kolbe.
Billy Pitts scored for the host Cougars, assisted by Logan Pitts, in the 79th minute.
Warsaw improves to 11-1-1 on the season, while LCA drops to 1-5.
The Tigers play at Class 1-A No. 5 Fort Wayne Canterbury Tuesday and then travel to Goshen for a key conference game Thursday night. Warsaw is 3-0-1 in Northern Lakes Conference action. LCA plays at Manchester Tuesday night.
JV Tennis Team Dominates At NLC Tourney
The Warsaw junior varsity boys tennis team put on a dominating performance Saturday to win the conference tournament at Wawasee.
The JV Tigers won individual championships at four of the five positions to claim the team title of the Northern Lakes Conference event contested in Syracuse.
Warsaw, coached by Rick and Jan Orban, tallied 28 points for the championship. Plymouth was runner-up with 18 points, followed by Northridge (15), NorthWood (13), Goshen (9) and Elkhart Memorial (4).
Winning singles titles for the Tigers were Nick Hamrick at No. 1 and Drew Schramm at No. 3. Hamrick defeated Max Holloway of Plymouth 8-4 in the finals. Schramm topped Austen Schmidt of Northridge by an 8-3 count in the final.
The Tigers won both of the doubles championships Saturday. The No. 1 team of Nic Jansen and Christopher Herendeen beat Matheus Castro and San Hoover of Northridge 8-2 in the title match. Caleb Snyder and Andrew Cox teamed to win the No. 2 doubles title for WCHS, beating Austin Conrad and Riley Smith of NorthWood in their final by an 8-5 count.
Caleb Ray placed second at No. 2 singles for the Tigers. Nate Knapp of Plymouth defeated Ray 8-2 in the title match.
Warsaw plays at Concord Monday in a huge NLC clash to determine the regular-season league championship. Both the varsity Tigers and the Minutemen are 6-0 in conference play. Concord will then host the NLC Tournament (for varsity teams) Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
