Poyner Wins, Tigers Second At NP
The Warsaw senior standout took top honors in the Boys AAA race at the large and loaded field at the New Prairie Invitational in New Carlisle.
The New Prairie event, which featured a total of nine races, included over 100 high school teams and about 2,000 runners.
Poyner covered the 5,000-meter course in a winning time of 15:35. His effort was the fastest time ever by a Warsaw runner at the New Prairie Invitational.
Coach Jim Mills’ No. 5 Warsaw team captured second place in the final team standings among the 30 teams in the Boys AAA (Large School) division. No. 3 Valparaiso won the team title with a score of 49. Warsaw was second with a 104, while fellow Northern Lakes Conference member Northridge took third at 117.
Junior Ellis Coon was third overall for the Tigers and senior Robert Murphy was 10th. Coon finished in a time of 15:47 and Murphy clocked in at 16:05. Brysten James placed 33rd in 16:37 for Warsaw, followed by teammates Tyler Houvener in 57th (17:08), Nate Haller in 78th (17:25) and Ismael Calderon in 87th (17:33).
It was a highly-successful day all the way around for Mills’ program as the Tigers won the Freshmen/Sophomore team championship.
Owen Glogovsky captured the individual title in the Frosh/Sophomore race in a winning time of 16:49 to lead the Tigers. Warsaw won the team title with a score of 42, edging past Lake Central (44) in the 25-team field.
Daniel Messenger was fourth overall in the race in a time of 17:08 for WCHS. Michael Compton placed seven in 17:23, followed by Cam Hoskins in 14th (17:50), Nick Bergen in 16th (17:56), Jacob DeBoest in 18th (17:59) and Jacob Adley in 32nd (18:20).
Warsaw takes its unbeaten NLC record (4-0) to Syracuse Tuesday to face Wawasee.
