Boys Soccer Team Wins NLC Contest
The Warsaw boys soccer team was able to rally to remain undefeated in Northern Lakes Conference play Tuesday night.
The Class 2-A No. 3 Tigers got a pair of second-half scores to edge past host NorthWood 3-2 in NLC play in Nappanee.
The Tigers, who improve to 10-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the NLC, trailed 2-1 at intermission. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on a goal in the sixth minute by Taylor Wegmiller before Warsaw tied the league contest on a score by senior Diego Lopez in the seventh minute. NorthWood retook the lead at 2-1 on a tally by Clayton Seitz in the 36th minute.
Warsaw rallied to tie the contest in the 63rd minute as standout Lopez scored off a penalty kick. The Tigers got the game winner in the 71st minute on a goal by Ethan Goodman, assisted by Matt Williams.
Warsaw had a 10-6 edge in shots on goal and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Tiger keeper Michael Yantz had four saves for the winners. Kyle Djikstra had eight saves for the host Panthers.
NorthWood drops to 4-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the NLC with the loss.
Warsaw plays at Lakeland Christian Academy Saturday at 6 p.m. in a varsity only contest.
Volleyball Team Continues Winning Ways
The Warsaw volleyball team continued its outstanding season with another win Thursday night.
The host Tigers collected a 3-1 non-conference victory over Columbia City to improve to 12-1 on the season. Warsaw has not lost since their lone setback to host Lafayette Jeff in the Lafayette Jeff Tournament on Aug. 18.
Standout senior Jamie Lacheta led the Tigers with 20 kills and 14 digs Thursday as the hosts topped the Eagles 25-21, 25-13, 23-25, 25-15.
Junior Emily Poe had another strong match for coach Mike Howard’s team with 14 kills and three aces. Senior setter Chloe Hubner had 46 assists and a team-high four aces.
Senior Sam Jensen had three aces and led the Tigers with two blocks. Delaney Goble had three aces and 11 digs. Alex Sanchez had 12 digs and Katie Voelz 10 kills for the winners.
The Warsaw JV team won 25-17, 25-18 over the Eagles.
Warsaw (12-1 overall and 3-0 in the NLC) plays at league foe Plymouth Thursday night.
LaLonde Leads Golfers
Nikki LaLonde led the way as the Warsaw girls golf team defeated Whitko 183-242 Tuesday in play at Stonehenge.
LaLonde shot a 9-hole total of 39 to earn medalist honors for the Tigers, fresh off a first-place showing in the NLC Tournament Saturday.
Morgan Sands finished with a 44 and Alexis Manwaring 48 for coach Chris LaLonde’s squad. Elizabeth Meadows shot a 50 and Ashley Murrell 52 for the winners.
Warsaw hosts its own sectional Saturday back at Stonehenge. The first tee times are scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
