UPDATE: Suspect In Custody After Chase
It took police about 10 minutes to apprehend a suspect who was involved in a minor traffic accident and fled the scene Monday afternoon in Warsaw.
At approximately 1:10 p.m. Monday, officers of the Warsaw Police Department noted the suspect was involved in a minor collision at Winona Avenue and Detroit Street and, because he was driving on a suspended license and had a warrant for his arrest for a failure to appear charge, he fled on foot.
The suspect, identified as Damien Hoskins, 20, of Warsaw, was driving a vehicle that rear-ended another vehicle. His girlfriend was in the vehicle with him at the time of the crash. Hoskins told her, “I have a warrant. Love you, bye,” and took off running.
Hoskins ran to the public access site near Lakeview Drive and Smith Street where he jumped from a pier and swam to a nearby island. He was apprehended when he swam ashore. He was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and fleeing law enforcement.
Officers of Winona Lake, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police assisted in the pursuit and apprehension.
