Riley Wins Wild One At Wawasee
Both teams held nothing back but it was the visiting Wildcats that walked away victorious, outscoring the Warriors, 4-3, for the win.
The home team got the scoring started in the very first minute of the game when senior Corey Kenworthy found sophomore Ricky Camargo for a goal to give Wawasee the early 1-0 lead. The goal by Camargo was the first Wawasee had scored on the season and broke a 120-minute scoreless drought.
The Warrior defense could not hold off the quick Riley squad for long though as junior forward Scott Warner found the back of the net in the fourth minute of the match. Warner was unassisted on the play. The Wildcats wasted no time in getting the lead when sophomore Jon Boye maneuvered through the Warrior defense and found senior Tony Juarez for a goal in the games sixth minute.
Riley’s ball control, namely from Boye and Juarez, pressured the Warrior defense in first half and paid off when Warner took a rebounded shot by Boye and put it in for his second goal of the half giving the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.
Luke Smith led the second half attack on Riley in the 50th minute when he launched a shot from 24 yards out and found the back of the net to bring the Warriors within one goal. Smith was unassisted on the score.
Senior Jordan Acton was visible all over the field, clearing several balls inside the Warriors goal box and attributed for two shots on goal in the game. Acton made perhaps his best play of the game when attributed an assist late. Junior Fernando Camargo joined his brother on the scorecard when he headed in Acton’s pass to tie the game at three goals apiece in the 72nd minute.
Spirits were high on the Warrior sideline and for good reason but Riley spoiled all hopes of a victory when the team took the ball down field and after Secor deflected a shot from one Wildcat, Warner completed his hat trick by heading Secor’s deflection back into the goal to give Riley the decisive goal in the games 73rd minute.
The loss drops Wawasee to 0-4 on the season. After the game, Warrior head coach Tom Taylor expressed some concern over the team’s first half play. “Better defense, we’ve been working on that and we still need to. We don’t stay in position and that hurt us today in the first half.”Taylor remained positive after a tough loss, stating his team will continue to work and grow. “We feel moral victory…we move on from here.”
The Warriors will move on to Bremen next week where they will play two games in the annual Bremen Invitational. Wawasee’s first game will be at 11 a.m. Wawasee’s junior varsity team captured a victory from Riley’s JV squad, winning 3-1 behind goals from Austin Shrack, Alex Doll, and Korey Knafel.
