The Wawasee girls golf team played a less than memorable match Tuesday night when they faced Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen at Maple Crest Country Club. The Lady Warriors, however, were able to edge out the host Lady Redskins by a final tally of 229-230.
Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone was very blunt about his opinion of the all-around performance when asked about the match. “We didn’t play very well…we have a few things to improve on for Thursday.”
The Warriors were helped to their slim victory by senior captain Alex Goralczyk, who posted an unusual 54, but that proved to be the low score for the visiting team on Tuesday night. The senior started out rough posting a 10 on her first hole but recovered to stay rather level the remainder of the final eight holes.
Goralczyk, usually a number three golfer in the Wawasee lineup, was moved to fifth because she has been under the weather this past week. Coverstone remarked that Goralczyk’s surprising performance was one of the keys to victory. “Alex shot a 54 in her first match back after being ill, which we did not expect, great effort. Without her score today, we don’t win.”Freshmen Mikala Mawhorter and Kylee Rostochak both turned in a 58 for the night while sophomore Courtney McDaniel posted a 59 to round out the varsity scorecard. Sophomore captain Elizabeth Jackson had an off night and turned in a 60, where on most nights shoots in the 40s.
Low score for Tuesday’s match was posted by Goshen’s Teage Minier who finished with a 45. The win gives the Lady Warriors a 6-1 mark on the season and an NLC mark of 1-0.
Coverstone closed his interview after the match by saying that his biggest concern was the girls coming down on themselves.
“We have to do better at recovering after bad holes,” Coverstone said. “Golf is a game that can beat you mentally and we have to improve on not letting that happen.”
The Wawasee JV beat Goshen 247-269, led by a 54 from Kamryn Foy.
