Lancers Open Soccer Season With Win
Four different Lancer players netted goals in the victory at Miller Field in Winona Lake.
The hosts led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Jocelyn Evans, assisted by Darcy Johnson off a corner kick, in the 21st minute and a penalty kick by Kelsey Christner.
The Lancers, who started five freshmen in the contest, got goals from Holly Bennett and Ryann Casciari in the second half for the 4-1 win. Carianne Sobey had an assist in the final half for the winners.
“Today was a good first outing for us,” said Grace College coach Michael Voss. “IIT was very disciplined, controlled and brought a very organized, technical game at us. To score four goals and have good possession in our first match is a decent report card for day one. There were moments of true brilliance, yet we still have quite a bit of work to do. I’m happy with our gain in knowledge and experience from the day.”
Grace outshot their guests 18-6, while keeper Carmen Barnhill had three saves in the net.
The Lancers played 19 players in the win, including seven different freshmen.
Grace plays at Cincinnati Christian University Monday night and at Marygrove College Wednesday afternoon. The Lancers host the Women’s National Team of Haiti Saturday at 4 p.m. at Miller Field.
