The front tractor and single semi-trailer, driven by Sharon Zakre, 42, of Niles, Mich., was stopped or slowing for the traffic signal at the intersection when her truck was struck in the rear by another tractor and double semi-trailer that was also westbound.
The second truck was driven by Horacio Rodriguez, 40, of Calumet City, Ill. Rodriguez was injured and transported by ambulance to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. Zakro was also slightly injured and transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital where she was treated and released.
After colliding, Rodriguez’s truck and double trailer jackknifed and rolled over in the north ditch in front of Culver’s Restaurant. The Westbound lanes of U.S. 30 had been reduced to one westbound lane since the crash as wreckers and crews work to upright the truck and clean up the area, but all lanes are now open. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management also was on scene due to the adhesive material being transported in the semi-trailers that rolled over.
It is unknown at this time why Rodriguez failed to see the truck in front of him slowing or stopping. The crash remains under investigation by the Warsaw Police Department. Warsaw Police were assisted by Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Multi-Township EMS, Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Transportation, Kosciusko Emergency Management, and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
