Wawasee Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington tells Stacey Page that a student heard about an alleged bomb threat to the school and informed a teacher. The teacher then immediately alerted school administration and the school was evacuated.
Dr. Edington says the entire building was evacuated and students were escorted on foot to nearby Vega Field while officers from Syracuse Police Department and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and members of the Syracuse-Turkey Creek Fire Department searched the building.
Edington notes the school is not yet in a position to take disciplinary action as they are first concentrated on getting students back into their classrooms. “We’ll now cooperate with police and fully investigate the situation,” he adds. “We have 3,300 students doing good things and unfortunately incidents like these make us stand out in a not so good light.”
Wawasee schools will release for summer vacation on May 31.
