Joan Younce, from Warsaw Purdue Extension
Office, presented a well-attended nutrition program at the Milford Public Library on Monday, April 30. The topic was “Add Some ZIP with Herbs and Spices.”
Did you know that the reason for Columbus’ voyage in 1492 was to find a more direct passage to the rich spices of the Orient? Herbs and spices have been added to foods for centuries because they help make our food taste better. Herbs are leaves of low-growing shrubs.
Spices come from the bark, root, buds, seeds, berry, or the fruit of tropical plants and trees. You can find fresh or dried herbs and spices at your local grocery store. Spices and herbs help retain flavor in foods while cutting back on dietary fat, sugar and sodium/salt.
People attending the program were able to taste several fresh herbs including thyme, rosemary, basil, sage, dill, and oregano. Mrs. Younce shared a delicious Herb Dip and crackers with the attendees. Maureen Conley won a thyme plant that Mrs. Younce brought. Diane May won the book Mighty Spice Cookbook by John Gregory-Smith, and Sarita Hernandez won the book The Flavor Bible, by Karen Page. These books are also available for checking out at the library. The next nutrition class will be in September.
